Post-Holiday Weekend Wrap-Up – A Mixed Bag for Boston Fans

Like many of you, I took advantage of the long holiday weekend for some much needed R&R. I attended a few cookouts with family and friends, wrapped up an exciting season of T-Ball with my kids, and worked in the yard. Most importantly, I spent some of the time paying tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country. I helped my son and his Cub Scout Pack replace flags at a local cemetery, and took him to the town’s Memorial Day ceremonies. To all of the men and women, past and present, who have made weekend like this possible: Thank You.

Now, after such a busy weekend, probably more than a few of us momentarily took our eyes off Red Sox Nation and the Celtics. It’s ok, I won’t tell. But here’s a quick roundup of what you need to know:

THE RED SOX: Not a bad weekend for the Sox. They’ve won 3 of their last 4 games. They dropped one game to Tampa Bay over the weekend, but they’ve beaten the Detroit Tigers in their last 2 games. Of course, there is still some drama. Dustin Pedroia hurt his thumb, had an MRI, and we’re hoping he won’t need surgery. Youkilis is back, and he’s playing – 1st Base mostly. However it’s widely believed that his playing time is really being used to showcase him for a potential trade.

THE CELTICS: They’re still alive in the playoffs! They fought a hard battle against Philly on Saturday night, and survived, if not a bit bruised and battered. With almost no rest, they arrived in Miami on Monday, for their first game against the Heat. This time they lost. They were tired, Ray Allen seemed barely present, and my seven-year old could have done a better job calling the game. They play Game 2 in Miami tonight. Here’s hoping they got a bit of rest, and some better officials.

Today I’ll be doing a little pre-game jig, making my son don his #34 Jersey (he was wearing it when they won on Saturday), and holding my breath during every foul shot. That should guarantee a win, right?

Did You Catch the Red Sox Game? Red Sox Fall to Phillies in the First Game of Interleague Play

Here at Pink Hat Sports, we know that even the most die-hard fans have lives outside of sports. No one can see every game.

So if you missed Friday Night’s Red Sox game, here’s what you should know before meeting up with your foursome on the links.

The Game: Boston Red Sox v. Philadelphia Phillies

The Score: Red Sox: 4, Mariners: 6

The Recap: Daniel Bard started for the Sox, but it just wasn’t his night. He pitched for 5 rough innings, with three hits, 5 walks and three strikeouts. When he left the Sox were down 5-2.  On a bright note, three Red Sox players homered, Adrian Gonzalez, Mike Aviles and Cody Ross, but that wasn’t enough tonight.

Beyond the Score: Inter-league play is here, and the Red Sox and the Phillies are living parallel lives in their respective leagues. Both teams sit at the bottom of their Divisions, but have had started to make a comeback in recent days. Bobby Valentine was ejected for the first time this year for arguing a call. The Phillies Manager wasn’t even at the game because he was serving a one-game suspension. Red Sox catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia had to leave the game early after being grazed by a pitch on his ear. Finally, former Red Sox closer, Jonathan Papelbon, made a statement of his own by closing out the game with a flawless ninth inning.

A Tomboy Raising A Princess: Taking Her Out to the Ballgame

My daughter is proof-positive that nature beats nurture when it comes to raising your kids (at least some of the time).

Some moms of baby girls look forward to dressing them in pigtails and pretty outfits, helping them decorate their doll houses with just the right dainty furniture, and seeing their first dance recital. Not this Mom.

I’ve never discouraged her from playing with dolls or from wearing the frilliest dresses for every major holiday (like days that end in Y), and believe me it shows. Growing up a tomboy who had no interest in Barbie, or playing house, or dresses, I’ve always felt a little ill-equipped in this department.

However, when it comes time to help out at my daughter’s basketball or t-ball practice, I feel like I shine a little bit brighter as her Mom. And my greatest joy this Mother’s Day weekend was taking her to her first Red Sox game.

This was dangerous for me. I knew I risked being disappointed if boredom set in after the second inning. As it turned out though. she loved it! We made sure she had the proper attire: a Red Sox hat, with just a bit of sparkle around the B, and I “Heart” Red Sox-shirt, with a heart-shaped baseball emblazoned on the front. She was raring to go.

As a family, we took in the sights and sounds of Yawkey Way. My son and daughter each played a little catch with a guy on stilts, and we munched on Fenway Franks before taking our seats.

There's nothing better than a Fenway Frank

Once the game started, I fully expected the whining to begin, but then I offered to show my daughter how to score the game. I had downloaded a kids’ version of a baseball scorecard, do that she could mark the progress of each Red Sox batter. To my delight, she really took to it! For each batter, she colored in the little circles that marked whether they got on base. We talked about the players and their nicknames (I think her new favorite is ‘Salty‘), and the difference between a ball and a strike. Thanks to Cody Ross, she learned where the Green Monster is, too.

We worked on scoring the game together

Ironically, all the while, my husband had to console my teary-eyed 7-yr old son who had spilled his lemonade.

She’s only 5 years old, so how much of that night she will remember is anyone’s guess, but this tomboy Mom will never forget her first Red Sox Game.

Heading to Fenway Tonight? It’s A Big Night for Beckett, In More Ways Than One

Josh Beckett turns 32 years old today, but he’ll have to earn his birthday wishes from Fenway fans.

Tonight will be his first appearance on the mound since he was vigorously booed off by fans last Thursday. His current record is 2-4, and his ERA is approaching 6.00.

Last week’s performance might have been we hope anyway, when the Red Sox bottomed out. They have one every game since then, rather handily. Things seem like they might just be starting to come together for the Red Sox, and the last thing fans want is a poor performance by an unapologetic, spoiled, over-rated starting pitcher to pull the brakes on this train.

Josh Beckett

Here’s hoping Josh has been gifted with a bit more maturity, humility, and A strong arm for his birthday. He’s going to need it.

On a side note, today is also “Thank’s Wake” Day at Fenway. At 3:30, there will be a ceremony to honor him. Tim Wakefield, the epitome of the team player in good times and bad. Josh, you could learn a lot from him.

Mother’s Day Weekend Was a Good Weekend for Boston Fans

Here at Pink Hat Sports, we know that even the most die-hard fans have lives outside of sports, especially on Mother’s Day weekend! No one can see every game.So if you missed the Red Sox and Celtics over the weekend, here’s what you should know before you settle in for the work-day. It’s All Good!!

The Red Sox: Cleveland Indians v. Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox won!! They won on Friday, Saturday and Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. After Josh Beckett got booed off the mound on Thursday, the starting rotation, Bughholz, Doubront, and Bard all started to pitch like they should do it for a living, and the Red Sox batters supported them with plenty of runs. The fans at the park saw their share of home runs and extra base hits from the likes of Pedroia, Middlebrooks and Cody Ross.
Here’s a rundown of the weekend scores:

  • Friday: Red Sox: 7, Indians: 5
  • Saturday: Red Sox: 4, Indians: 1
  • Sunday: Red Sox: 12, Indians: 1

The Celtics: Game 1, Round 2, NBA Playoffs:  Philadelphia @ Boston

The Celtics win on Saturday night was a bit more dramatic. The Celtics had a couple of rough quarters, and Rajon Rondo was a little bi-polar, with a really lackluster 1st half. He kicked into overdrive though late in the game. The combination of Kevin Garnett, with 29 points (the most points for him since 2008), and Rondo with a triple-double is what gave the Celtics the lead, finally, in the fourth quarter.

  • The Final Score: Celtics 92, 76ers 91

The Celtics play Game 2 at the Garden tonight.

In Other News: According to Boston.com, Former Red Sox, now Indians pitcher, Derek Lowe got a special gift from the Red Sox on Saturday. Lowe had his 2004 World Series ring stolen from his home in Florida recently. Red Sox ownership took the time on Saturday to drop by and simply replace it. In Lowe’s words, “it was one of the classiest things I’ve seen.”

Did You Catch the Red Sox Game: The Bats Come Alive to FINALLY Give the Sox a Win

Here at Pink Hat Sports, we know that even the most die-hard fans have lives outside of sports. No one can see every game.

So if you missed Friday Night’s Red Sox game, here’s what you should know before head off to the T-Ball field this morning.

The Game: Cleveland Indians v. Boston Red Sox

The Score: Red Sox: 7, Indians: 5

The Recap: Clay Buchholz started tonight, and fans got nervous early on. He gave up a run in the first inning, but settled down after that. Red Sox batters were fun to watch tonight. In the second inning, Will Middlebrooks hit a 2-run double, AGAIN. Dustin Pedroia had a 2-run double in the fourth, and Ross had a 1-run double in the fifth. Red Sox were up by 7-1 at the top of the 6th, and the fans seemed to be in disbelief. Buchholz pitched until the 7th inning, when he left the game with bases loaded. Three of those runners scored. Cleveland scored once more in the top of the ninth, but the Sox managed to hold on for the win.

Beyond the Score: The buzz continues to be about Josh Beckett and his golf outing. Fans’ blood is boiling, not so much about his round of golf but about his refusal to recognize that even if it wasn’t bad, it sure seemed bad. During Thursday’s press conference, Beckett responded to an a question about whether he understood the fans’ perspective on this, his answer “Not on my off-day…We get 18 off-days a year. I think we deserve a little bit of time to ourselves..” Wrong answer Josh. As far as fans are concerned, he might as well have given them the finger. Red Sox fans will not let this go so easily.

On a brighter note, Bruce Springsteen is playing Fenway on August 14th!

Did You Catch the Red Sox Game? Like a Broken Record – Red Sox Drop Another

Here at Pink Hat Sports, we know that even the most die-hard fans have lives outside of sports. No one can see every game.

So if you missed Wednesday’s Red Sox game, here’s what you’ll want to know before you grab that cup of Joe in the morning.

The Game: Boston Red Sox v. Kansas City Royals

The Score: Red Sox: 3, Royals: 4

The Recap: The Royals took an early lead against starting pitcher John Lester, going up 3-0 in the first inning. The Red Sox tied it up in the third inning, after Adrian Gonzalez hit a 3-run double. Royals went ahead again in the fourth inning, with an RBI double by Alcides Escobar. Mortensen led the Red Sox bullpen efforts, and successfully staved off any more runs. The Red Sox put in a last ditched effort in the top of the ninth, They had the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, but couldn’t close the deal.

Beyond the Score: There’s plenty of drama and speculation to go around in the Red Sox clubhouse right now. First, GM Ben Cherrington has said that Youkilis will return to his spot at third when he comes of the DL. With the performance Middlebrooks has had in his absence, many are speculating that Youk could be traded to make a permanent spot available for Middlebrooks.  Second, Josh Beckett, who missed his spot in the pitching rotation due to muscle soreness was seen playing golf over the weekend. Something is not right there, and Manager Bobby Valentine is struggling to put any kind of positive spin on it. Finally, the Red Sox lost a family member today, when “the Voice of Fenway,” Carl Beane died in a car accident earlier today. Our condolences go out to him and his family.

Why Pink Hat Sports? Because We Can’t All Be Diehards

Why start this blog? Hmmm, good question. For a lot of reasons I guess, most of all for fun. Actually, truth be told, there are three reasons why I started this blog.

  • Because most of us really are “Pink Hat Fans” – There’s a place for a sports blog that recognizes sports as one dimension in the bustle of our overflowing lives.
  • I want to remind and encourage my still very young daughter to not shy away from areas and interests typically dominated by men.
  • I’ll be opening my already big mouth a little wider here, and in the process, I hope I can do a little good for causes I support.

Because I am pretty long-winded by nature, and don’t want to chase you away too fast, today I’ll just focus on why I named this blog “Pink Hat Sports”.

Here’s the thing. The term “Pink Hat Fan” isn’t a compliment; I know that. It’s a term coined by certain sports fans and sports radio DJs, and it most likely originated in Boston. Officially, at least according to Wikipedia’ s Glossary of Baseball, a “Pink Hat Fan” is:

“A fan of a team who is perceived to be merely ‘jumping on the bandwagon’ as opposed to a more loyal, knowledgeable fan (of either gender). This term comes from the alternate pink caps that are sometimes worn by female fans. A “pink hat” is not necessarily a female fan, nor do they all literally wear pink hats.”

“Pink Hat Fans” are dismissed as folks who are simply warming the seats for the real fans who deserve them more.

Though some will go to great pains to tell you that this term is not a sexist stereotype. Let’s be serious; I think it’s safe to say that less than 2% of men at a Red Sox game are wearing a pink hats. Ask a “real fan” to draw a picture of a “Pink Hat Fan” and I guarantee they won’t draw a picture of a chubby guy with 5 o’clock shadow sitting at the bar, with a beer in one hand and handful of (pea)nuts in the other.

So there you have it; according to common wisdom a “Pink Hat Fan” is a waste of a good ticket to the game. Certain sports-radio personalities have a lot of fun with this. They profile some unwitting (and coincidentally female) fan outside the park who has clearly had a few pregame cocktails, and engage in their own “Jaywalking“-like comedy bit.  And I know, it’s “all in good fun,” and sometimes it does get me to chuckle, but it still sort of bugs me too.

My take? I like sports; I love the Boston teams (the Red Sox and Patriots in particular). I’ll also admit that I don’t know as much about the players and nuances of the game as some do, especially the folks who get paid for it. I also like to wear pink hats, AND THAT’S OK.

The long and the short of it is this: male or female, there are very few of us who get paid to stay on top of every bit of sporting news, or who even want to. I don’t know about you, but turning on sports radio is NOT the first thing I do when I get in the car. We all have lives outside of spectator sports. We have spouses, families, pets, jobs, meetings, reports to write, lawns to mow, Little League games to watch, dance recitals to attend, and parent-teacher conferences. Some of us even have hobbies. With all of this, most if us can really only manage to be casual fans, so most of us must also be “Pink Hat Fans”.

We Can't All be Diehards

We Can't All Be Diehards

The truth is, a little bit of sports knowledge goes a long way. If you know about at just one game played last night, the score and maybe a stellar play (for color), you have yourself an icebreaker, and the skeleton key to credibility in any sports discussion. It gives you with an immediate connection with your kid’s soccer coach or that client you’re trying to impress. A tidbit or two of sports trivia can even get you through that miserable cocktail party at your brother-in-law’s neighbor’s parent’s house (just don’t forget to bring that bottle of wine).

John Steinbeck once wrote “Sports get into everything.” He was right, of course. It’s part if the fabric of our lives, but it is not everything. That’s why there is a place for this simple little blog, with just enough information to be useful, but not enough to weigh you down.

And, like the Red Sox lineup, this is all a work-in-progress. So don’t be shy, let me know what you’re thinking!

Did You Catch the Red Sox Game? Red Sox Finally … FINALLY Get a Win!

Here at Pink Hat Sports, we know that even the most die-hard fans have lives outside of sports. No one can see every game.

So if you missed Monday’s Red Sox game, here’s what you’ll want to know before you try to break the ice at that sales meeting.

The Game: Boston Red Sox v. Kansas City Royals

The Score: Red Sox: 11, Royals: 5

Will Middlebrooks

Bringing up #64 from Pawtucket - best decision yet this year? Perhaps. (AP Photo)

The Recap: The Red Sox got out of the gate early with 4 runs in the first inning. They kept the pressure on, and had 7 runs by the 7th inning, with Middlebrooks, Pedroia and Ortiz each hitting home runs. They needed every one of them, as their defensive skills didn’t match their hitting. However, Felix Doubront was able to pitch into the seventh inning, giving the bullpen some much-needed rest after Sunday’s 18-inning disaster.

Beyond the Score: The Red Sox will have tough decisions to make once Youkilis comes off the DL. His replacement, Will Middlebrooks continues to be red-hot. He had an error in the 3rd inning that helped the Royals to score 2 runs, but that was only after he hit a 3-run homer in the first inning. Then he hit another homer n in the 8th inning. This rookie is batting over .350 right now, I predict #64 jerseys will soon start flying off the racks in the souvenir shops.

Did You Catch the Red Sox Game Sunday? After 17 Innings, 18 Pitchers, and 6 Hours the Sox Walk Away Empty-Handed

Here at Pink Hat Sports, we know that even the most die-hard fans have lives outside of sports. No one can see every game.

So if you missed today’s Red Sox game, here’s what you’ll want to know before you take your morning coffee break.

The Game: Baltimore Orioles v. Boston Red Sox

The Score: Red Sox: 6, Orioles: 9

The Recap: 17 Innings! The Red Sox trailed early, but rookie Will Middlebrooks hit a grand-slam in the fifth inning, to tie the game at 5-5. At the end of 9 innings, the game was tied 6-6. No one scored again until the top of the seventh inning, when Adam Jones hit a 3-run homer.

MiddlebrooksGrandSlam

Beyond the Score: This was not the longest game ever – that happened in 1984 when it took the Chicago Cubs over 8 hours to overtake the Milwaukee Brewer, but at over 6 hours it ranks up there. Both teams ran out of pitchers, by the end of the game Darnell McDonald was pitching for the Sox, after coming in as a pinch-runner, and DH Chris Smith pitched for Orioles. Ironically, as DH, Davis went 0-8 today, and struck out 5 times.
